*1 in 6 women will be sexually assaulted in her lifetime.
*Every 2 minutes someone in the US is sexually assaulted.
Sexual Assault is a broad term that includes rape, date rape, attempted rape, violent sexual acts and incest. Sexual Assault is one of the most frequently committed violent crimes in the United States. It is also one of the most under reported crimes.
If you are reading this and it applies to you – YOU ARE A SURVIVOR! Yes, you have absolutely been victimized, but you survived. Your survival is truly inspirational.
There is so much stigma associated with words like rape and incest, it is no wonder survivors often suffer in silence. This is such a powerful crime against the self that can have an impact on so many levels. Sexual Assault is a violation that can rob you of your sense of self, your self worth and the connection you previously had with your body.
While Sexual Assault is very common in this country, no two survivors cope with their experience the same. Some common emotional responses are shock, depression, anger, indifference, panic, laughter and avoidance.
For many, the thought of seeking counseling and having to revisit this experience and the aftermath, understandably does not sound helpful or appealing. However, Sexual Assault counseling has proven very effective in processing the past, coping with the present and improving the outlook for the future.
Survivors of Sexual Assault who never seek assistance often experience additional effects of the trauma. Some remain in a depressive state, some develop eating disorders or self-harming behaviors, some contemplate suicide, some act in hyper sexualized ways, and some fear intimacy and avoid close relationships.
It does not have to be this way! You do not have to continue on your own. I will provide you with a safe and supportive environment and together we will work through your experiences. I will develop a treatment plan specifically catered to you as no woman, no experience, no reaction and no healing is the same.
If you are not ready to take this step but would like additional information on Sexual Assault, please contact the free & confidential National Sexual Assault Hotline at 1-800-656-HOPE. And know that I am here when you are ready.
